APIP — The Asia-Pacific Islands Program
APIP is a collaborative venture between Pattimura and Southern Cross universities that aims to foster research and community consultation and collaboration addressed to various social, cultural and environmental issues affecting Asia-Pacific islands in the early 21st Century. The primary focus of this collaborative program is the islands of Indonesia, Melanesia and Australia.
Initial projects include:
- Research into the significance of the Darwin-Ambon yacht race on the development of Australia-Maluku relations in the 1980s and 1990s
- Digitising back issues of the journal Maluku Studies (for open access on this site)
- Hosting and coordinating the 9th International Small Island Cultures Conference in Tual, in the Kei Islands (eastern Indonesia) in July 2013
- Establishing a GeoLive research tool for island studies research
Collaborations between APIP and other Asia-Pacific regional research organisations are in development. In 2013, for instance, APIP researchers are commencing a collaboration with the Vietnam Institute of Art and Cultural Studies on Vietnamese islands and their cultural heritage and environmental resources.
